Nécessaire: Another Instagram Brand Or Is It Worth The Hype?

Even with the [quite impressive] social media strategy implemented by Nécessaire: constant ads and working with top influencers on Instagram, it wasn’t enough to hook my interest. An article in Vogue’s May 2020 issue featuring Gal Gadot as the cover star is what finally sucked me in. In the words of Jenna Rennert, “ ‘For so many brands, it was an afterthought,’ says Nécessaire cofounder and CEO Randi Christiansen, who has made it her personal mission to popularize facial-grade body products.” I was officially invested, I’m not sure if the social media advertisements weren’t doing the brand justice or I just wasn’t paying much attention before but, the thought of skincare for your body was a new concept and I was excited to try this out for myself.

I immediately hopped on their website to do a bit more digging and found that is this a clean and environmentally friendly brand (major plus) that contains no parabens or sulfates. Both the body wash and lotion have Marula, Cacay, and Meadowfoam oil to soften the skin without stripping it of natural oils. Buying these products was almost like a domino effect; I was set on getting the body wash and then I noticed the lotion was made with Niacinamide so obviously, I needed to try that as well, then the exfoliator had so many good reviews and contains both physical AND chemical exfoliants so I needed to try that as well. Each product was around $25-$30 but, they sell sets of 3 for $60 which is an amazing deal.

(Even though their product is sold at Sephora, I would recommend going through their website to get access to their bundles which will save you some money!)

They offer a few different scents in the body wash and exfoliator while the lotion only comes in Fragrance-Free. The four lines are all very different; Fragrance-Free set for something simple, Eucalyptus for a cleaner or spa-like experience, Sandalwood (my choice) which is an earthy/musky scent, and Bergamot which is a fresh citrus option.

My personal opinion on the products

The Body Wash - The packaging was the first thing that caught my attention; no lip or cap, you just twist the bottle to reveal an opening at the top. When I used the body wash I noticed it did lather very easily and did not feel drying. I will say that I could actually still smell the sandalwood hours after I showered, so be sure to pick a scent you will like!

The Exfoliator - The exfoliating beads are pretty fine and don’t feel too rough on the skin. I also really like how this lathers up as well. After only using this a few times, I think it does do a good job at exfoliating my skin and I love how this product uses chemical exfoliators.

The Lotion - I am a big fan of this moisturizer. I love that this has Niacinamide because some of my other body lotions can clog my pores a bit. The lotion does not come in any of their other scents and is only offered in Fragrance-Free and honestly, I’m fine with that. As I mentioned above, the body wash smell lingers on your skin a bit and a scented lotion would be just too much on top of that.
