Women's March | Madrid
This year for the International Day of Women, I was in Madrid to celebrate. Walking around Sol earlier in the afternoon there had been some kind of concert going on but, the main event was the women’s march that was going to take place at night. Starting at 8 p.m. thousands and thousands of men and women headed over to Atocha to participate. Since purple is generally used as a symbol for women and women’s equality, it was everywhere. There were so many people wearing purple shirts or bandanas and most of the capital buildings were lit up with purple lights to support. Walking around and seeing all the signs that people made and hearing all the chants was so cool to me because I have never really been to a protest/march before so I didn’t know what it would be like or what to expect. I was really surprised at how big the crowd ended up being and how many people actually came, I thought it was just going to be younger women and girls, but there were tons of men, older women, and even little kids that came out to walk and be a part of the march. There was one group of women that I am assuming were part of some tribal dance group or something because they kept stopping to perform in the middle of the march. Their dance was really cool and they had people playing the drums for music but, it was kind of annoying that they would randomly stop the march whenever they felt like dancing. Aside from that, I had such a good time and I was really happy that I was able to participate in something like that because it was a new thing for me so it was so special that I could do that in Madrid.
