I know that stopping by Starbucks or Dunkin’ Donuts each morning for your matcha latte is just so easy but, that daily $5 can really add up. I want to help you cut back on your spending and start making your own matcha from the comfort of your home. It can be hard to give up your favorite drink from your favorite place; after trial and error, I have perfected the best at-home matcha recipe to make this a smooth transition.

This post will show you how to make a delicious matcha latte at home.

Matcha > Coffee, Here’s Why.

If you are making the switch from coffee to matcha or just want to know what all the hype is about here are some of the proven benefits of drinking matcha. The first thing that attracted me to matcha was its ability to boost your metabolism which supports weight loss and fat burning. Matcha powder is also packed with a ton of antioxidants (more than your typical steeped green tea). If that hasn’t sold you yet then maybe this will, you don’t get that caffeine crash that is typical with coffee. The effect of the caffeine in matcha lasts much longer than it does in coffee and since there is less caffeine you won’t get that jittery feeling.

What You Will Need:

  • Matcha Powder

  • Water

  • Milk of Your Choice

  • Cup or Mug

  • Handheld Mixer/Whisk

The Best At-home matcha latte:

But First … Matcha.

The single most important ingredient is obviously the matcha powder. Trust me, not all matcha is the same - some can be bitter or bad quality. My ALL-TIME favorite matcha powder that I have ever tried is the Vital Proteins Matcha Collagen powder supplement. There is a bit of sweetness to this powder so there is no need to add any extra sweetener. This matcha is dairy and gluten-free but the best part is the added collagen that helps support your hair, skin, and nails.

Vital Proteins offers this powder in a yummy Vanilla flavor as their Original unflavored. Something I love about this matcha is that you can buy it in individual packets, which is great to try out or for on the go!

All In The Tools

I like to keep things super simple (I also want as few dishes to wash as possible) so all you need is a cup or mug and a milk frother. The Zulay Handheld Whisk from Amazon is amazing and only $15. I use this every time I make a matcha latte and it is a real game-changer. When it comes to using a cup or a mug, I think it depends on whether you are making a hot or cold matcha drink. I personally love a typical mug for hot drinks and a cup with a straw for my iced matcha lattes - I linked some glasses I love below!

Get To Mixing

Now for the exciting part… let’s make our matcha latte! The first thing you are going to do is grab your cup or mug and fill it about 1/3 of the way with water. I think filling the cup up only 1/3 of the way with water is the perfect amount so you can mix the matcha but it’s not too much that your latte will taste watered down.

NOTE: If you are making a hot matcha latte, you should use hot water for this step.

Next, you are going to want to add your matcha powder to the water, use the recommended scoop amount on the package, or the full packet (depending on which matcha you are using).

Time to grab your mixer! I think the worst thing about drinking matcha is when the powder doesn’t fully dissolve and clumps together. The handheld mixer makes this step so easy and gets rid of any chunks that may be floating around. TIP: Make sure you have the mixer in your drink before turning it on so it doesn’t splash everywhere.

Got Milk

On to the final step, adding the milk of your choice! I personally think that almond or oat milk pairs the best with matcha but, you can choose whichever milk you prefer.

Hot Matcha Latte: Depending on how hot you like your drinks you can just pour your milk of choice directly in the mug or you can warm it up a bit before.

Additional Step - If you wanna be a bit extra, I recommend warming up your milk and using the hand mixer to achieve that cafe-style foam on top.

Iced Matcha Latte: Now is the time to add your ice cubes. I like to add my ice cubes to the water and matcha mixture and then fill the milk to the top. I am a bit extra and like to use both almond milk and a splash of oat milk.
